It’s often seen that people spend too much time doing the most basic computing operations. Here is a list of some of my favourite tools which power my PC at work.

Launchy

Always a problem finding the right file? Look no further. Launchy has been the most useful piece of software to get me directly to a file/folder or application by just typing out it’s name. Of course you need to make sure you index your hard disk, the right way. [Download]

ObjectDock

Is your desktop messed up with short-cuts to files & folders? Get ObjectDock, the Mac look alike taskbar. Easy access to folders and other applications without cluttering your desktop. [Download]

IrfanView
Simple, light-weight image editor. Crop, re-size your images quickly without having to load a heavy application like Adobe Photoshop for simple actions. Also with a few plug-ins it will let you view some of the more complex image formats without those heavy software installs. [Download]

Dropbox
A popular online storage which I only recently started using and it’s been super useful. I don’t bother with file transfers to the USB pen-drive anymore. Just copy the file in the Dropbox folder and it syncs with my Macbook at home. So I have access to important files at all time. [Website]

GTD wallpaper
If you don’t fancy those lovely desktop wallpapers here is something which is great to sort the files and shortcuts on the desktop. [Download]

And here is a bonus:

AvaFind/Google Desktop
If you’ve been unsatisfied with the search results given by Windows default search engine then get yourself one of these application. Google Desktop does a superb job of indexing content of the files, email applications so you can probably end up finding that needle in the haystack. [Ava Find Home Page / Google Desktop Download]

What’s your favourite piece of software that makes computing easier for you? Share your thoughts in the comments area.

Google Chrome is a browser that combines a minimal design with sophisticated technology to make the web faster, safer, and easier. A quick note on what I think about it.

I like it …

It’s blazing fast. Yes, pages load really really fast.

The recent bookmarks/most visited websites displayed on the default home page is useful.

Maximum screen space by doing away with the Menu at the top.

But yet not there …

The Google Toolbar is missing – I miss the direct image/news search options and also the ability to access my Google bookmarks directly from the toolbar. Keyword highlight also doesn’t happen.

The forward and backward button does not let me jump pages. You know that little arrow which gives you a quick view of pages to jump to.

Add-ons for Evernote & deli.ciou.us yet not there.

So Chrome has great potential to be my browser of choice but it’s yet got to power up on features to become the default.

I happened to read this story a few days back where Mark Cuban commented that only a ‘moron’ would buy YouTube. And it seems in less than a few days Google announced it’s plans to purchase YouTube. I would really like to know if somebody bothered to check with this gentleman on what he had to say about Google’s decision.

The way I see it video-sharing is going to be very exciting. With the growing bandwidth supply people are going to not only share their holiday photos anymore but also their holiday videos for that matter. I mean take my case, I want to share my wedding video with friends and relatives who didn’t make it for the wedding. If I have to send out a CD by courier to each one of them, it’s going to cost me a bomb. How easy would it be to just upload the file and let every know the video URL. Can be done even today, but I need a better broadband connection. Also I am not too sure on the privacy available at youtube.

Once these issues have been plugged in, I think sites like youtube will be helping us just the way a Google Image search has helped us or the Google Blog search. I see the youtube addition just another growth for the same. Google Video only gets more powerful now.
I was reading the new feature updates about Google Reader. I have been waiting for this application to get better so that I could change my reader from bloglines. I had really not experimented much with Reader earlier, so I can’t really make a comparison of the changes.

However, a few things which I liked about the Reader:

Nice, clean and user-friendly inter-face

Option to e-mail out blog posts

Add tags / Add star – Good if you happen to refer to blog posts often

Arjun, here has some more review on Google Reader.
